The subject matter matter in my recent work was derived from observations
I have during my time on the local bay and gulf waters . Some
compositions include objects such as fishing bobbers and channel
marker beckons. Other pieces focus on the endless expanse of space
and the hypnotic horizon line. I use the marine environment as
a springboard for ideas in my paintings. An example could be a
lost fishing bobber floating along lost from its owner, or how
a bright red color of a channel marker contrast with the teal
blue water. This environment to me is loaded with subject matter
that touches on man and nature surviving together. Some occurrences
that I witness seem to be small Zen like lessons that apply to
life in general. I like to compose my paintings around ideas like
these.
I have always strived to follow my natural instincts with how
I work and create art. Learning about myself as a person and applying
it in my work in different ways is a challenge and I find interesting.
Over years of painting I have developed a set of elements and
ways of working that is right for me and I use these elements
in all of my work. Color combinations, layering of paint to achieve
texture, and my personal way of applying paint in a energetic
and repetitious manner are examples of the elements. I feel strongly
that it is the layering and combination of these elements and
decisions that makes my work personal to me and a honest form
of expression.
